Day 1
Depart from the UK on an overnight flight.
Day 2
Arriving in Hanoi on the mid-morning, you are met at the airport and transferred to your central hotel. The remainder of the day is left free, to recoup or perhaps start exploring, depending on energy levels.
Day 3
The day in Hanoi starts with a visit to nearby Bat Trang, the tour including a ride through the village on a buffalo cart and some "have a go" involvement in the pottery making for which the village is famous. In the afternoon, take a swan paddle boat on Truc Bach Lake, followed by a cyclo tour Hanoi's Old Quarter. The evening starts with a traditional water puppet show and then its time to enjoy some of Hanoi's best homemade ice cream.
Day 4
Head to Hoa Lu and take a short walk up one of the surrounding limestone karst hills. Following your exertions, have a Vietnamese lunch in Tam Coc Town and then board your private sampan for a boat trip through Thung Nang Valley, passing through a cave formations, fields of lotus and a quaint pagoda. In the late afternoon take a gentle cycle tour through the rice fields, karsts formations and rural villages, before heading to Ninh Binh for the night.
Day 5
The morning starts in Van Long Nature Reserve (boat ride) and then drive on to Cuc Phuong, one of the few remaining pristine rain forests left in the country, visiting the excellent Cuc Phuong Endangered Primate Rescue Centre. Here you can trek with your guide into the dense forest to seek out some of the endangered species endemic to this region. Back to Ninh Binh for the evening.
Day 6
This morning drive on to Halong Bay, for an overnight cruise on Halong Bay. During the afternoon there is opportunity to swim or hire a kayak. After dinner try your hand at squid-fishing!

Day 8
Full day on the gorgeous beach at Lang Co, enjoying the range of facilities and activities of the resort.
Day 9
A second day in Lang Co.
Day 10
Drive south, over the Hai Van Pass, to atmospheric Hoi An. Spend the afternoon exploring the narrow streets of the town at your own pace.

Day 12
A second day in and around Hoi An. At leisure, but there is plenty to keep you entertained – cookery class? Lifestart crafts? Jeep excursion to the ruins at My Son?
Day 13
Fly from Danang down to Saigon where you only leave the airport to visit the Cu Chin Tunnels. Back to the airport for an evening flight to Siem Reap in Cambodia. Perhaps visit the temples during the late afternoon, when there are fewer visitors. Conclude your first day in Siem Reap with dinner entertained by traditional dancers.
Day 14
After breakfast, head out on a wonderful exploration of the Angkor sites on a leisurely bicycle ride. Avoid the midday heat back at the hotel, before heading back out by car later in the afternoon for sunset.

Only Laos is omitted from the classic Indochina circuit, perhaps a little too tranquil to hold the interest of younger ones, but most of Vietnam and the temples of Angkor in Cambodia are included – punctuated by cyclo rides, cycling, kayaking, swimming, trekking, fishing and a spot of farming.

2 nights Hanoi – 2 nights Ninh Binh –  overnight cruise around Halong Bay (3 days/2 nights, full board) – 3 nights Lang Co Beach – 3 nights Hoi An – 1 night Saigon – 2 nights Siem Reap
